LISTENING SECTION

In this section of the test, you will have the chance to show how well you understand spoken English. There are four parts to this section, with special directions for each part.

PART I. PICTURES

Directions: For each item, there is a picture and four short statements about it on the tape. The statements will be spoken TWICE and are NOT WRITTEN out on your test paper, so you must listen carefully and choose one of the statements of - (A), (B), (C), or (D) - that best describes the picture. Then, on your answer sheet, mark your choice.

Example:

Now look at the picture and listen to the four statements.

A.   The basket is made of woven rattan.       

     

B.   They shoot the ball to the basket.

C.   We need the basket for the flower.

D.   Some fruits are put in the basket.

Choice (A) –“The basket is made of woven rattan.”- Best describes what can be seen in the picture. Therefore, you should mark (A) on your answer sheet.

Now let’s begin with picture number 1.

PART II. QUESTIONS-RESPONSES

Directions: In this part of the test you will hear a question spoken in English, followed by three responses also, spoken in English. The question and responses will be spoken twice. They will not be printed in your test book, so you must listen carefully to understand what the speakers say. You have to choose the best response to each question. Now listen to a sample question.

You will hear                 : “Good morning Jack, how are you?         “                  Sample Answer

You will also hear          :

A.   I love my jacket.

B.   I’m very well, thank you.

C.   I wake up in the morning.

The best response to the question ’Good morning Jack, how are you?’ is choice (B)’ ‘I’m very well, thank you.’ Therefore you should choose answer (B) . Now let’s begin with question number 5.

5. Man:” Hi Julia, would you like playing badminton on Sunday?”

a. Sure, He is a badminton player.

b. No I don’t, I work overtime on Fridays.

c. Yes I will. Please, train me.

6. Woman:” Oh my God, my car is getting trouble again.”

a. I think you should call a mechanic.

b. It’s better to drive the car yourself.

c. please, tell her to call again.

7. Man:” Would you show me the way to the bank, please?”

a. It’s beside the Hospital, just take a taxi there.

b. I save my deposit in the National Bank.

c. I’m sorry, but the show has been over ten minutes ago.

8. Man:” Long time no see, How’s  your brother look like now?”

a. Well, I have two brothers and one sister.

b. You’ll never recognize him, he’s taller and bigger than before.

c. I like doing the camping with my family members.

PART III. SHORT CONVERSATION

Directions: In this part of the test. You will hear several short conversations. The conversations will NOT BE PRINTED in your test paper. You will hear the conversations TWICE, so you must listen carefully to understand what the speakers say.

In your test paper, you will read a question about each conversation. The question will be followed by four answers. You have to choose the best answer to each question and mark it on your answer sheet.

Now listen to a sample conversation:

You will hear: Girl         : “Are you sixteen yet?”

                     Boy : “Not yet, but my birthday is in March.”

                     Girl : “When it March?”

                     Boy : “It is March 20^th.”

You will read       : What do you learn from the conversation?

                     A. The girl is sixteen years old.

                     B. The boy is twenty years old.

                     C. The boy was born in March.

                     D. The girl’s birthday is March 20.

Choice (C) –“The boy was born in March.”- Best answer the question “What do you learn from the conversation?”.Therefore, you should mark (C) on your answer sheet. Now let’s begin with part III. short conversation:

9.       Woman      :” PURI INDAH hotel, Can I help you, sir?”

Man            :” Yes please, I would like to reserve a VIP room for two days.”

Woman       :” Sure, May I know your name and address, please?”

Man            :” RUDI PRASETYO, I live at Kencana street number 5, Magelang.”

PART IV. SHORT TALK PART IV.  SHORT TALK

Directions: In this part of the test, you will hear several short talks: Each will be spoken two times. They will rot be printed in your test hook, so you must listen carefully to understand and remember what is said. In your test book, you will read two or more questions about each short talk. Each question will be followed by four answers. You have to choose the best answer to each question and mark it on your answer sheet.

Let's begin with short talk number 12 and 13.

Man  : Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. Due to the bad weather and flood in Semarang, We will be Landing at the Adi Sumarmo airport , instead of Ahmad Yani airport. We can expect the landing time on 8.30 AM. It’s 15 minutes longer than our schedule. Please, all passengers keep on your seats. Our flight is forwarding to Surakarta regency. We are really apologize for this in convenience and thank you very much for your attention.
